Cornea, External Disease, and Refractive Surgery Fellowship

Curriculum

The clinical cornea fellowship is a one-year program for ophthalmologists selected through the SF Match program. Fellows rotate through the LSU Eye Center clinics and ambulatory surgery center and the Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans hospitals, Charity and University campuses. Fellows work under the supervision of the subspecialty-trained attending physicians on the faculty. Fellows have clinical and surgical duties as directed by the faculty. The fellowship introduces the trainees to all aspects of the anterior segment of the eye, helping to develop their skills in examination, diagnosis, treatment, and surgical procedures.

Fellows also work closely with the ophthalmology residents and medical students rotating through our department. Fellows are responsible for case presentations at monthly conferences, and participation in didactic lectures and Grand Rounds with the residents. At the completion of the program, each fellow is evaluated on medical and surgical skills.

Research

Fellows also involve themselves in many of the research projects conducted by our clinical and laboratory science faculty. This allows fellows to further enhance their knowledge of eye diseases and of newly developed clinical and surgical treatments. If interested, fellows can apply for an additional year of training to focus more fully on their research interests with the guidance of a faculty mentor.

Minimum qualifications:

• Graduate from an accredited ophthalmology residency program.
• MUST have at least 2 years of ophthalmic training within the United States.
• Eligible for Louisiana State Licensure. http://www.lsbme.org/

• Students must acquire J1 visa through ECFMG GEPT-LA license permit for foreign student.
• Must be certified by the ECFMG. http://www.ecfmg.org/

Salary & Benefits

All residents and fellows are employees of LSUHSC as House Officers (no junior faculty status for fellows).

Salary level for first year fellow is $41,815.

Health insurance is paid in part by LSU, in part by employee. Options are:

• State Employee Group Benefits (PPO or EPO)
• Major medical insurance coverage

Malpractice insurance is paid in full by LSUHSC and provides tail coverage. Please note this only covers work done within the training program, not moonlighting activities.

Disability is provided by LSUHSC. Some house officers like to purchase additional coverage at their expense for added benefits.

There are also optional vision and dental insurance plans.

Vacation is three weeks. Additional time for interviewing is granted as necessary.

Parking is paid by fellows @ approximately $20/month.

All fellows must be licensable in the State of Louisiana (www.lsbme.org). License applications should be made as soon as match results are received as it is a lengthy process. Training and pay will be delayed if license is not received prior to scheduled start date.
