What is a Low Vision Exam?

How is a Low Vision exam different from other eye exams. At the Lions / LSU Regional Low Vision Center, we don’t use bright lights or big words!

At the Low Vision Center, we begin our evaluation with a comprehensive interview covering a patient’s health history and visual needs in personal, social, educational, and vocational situations. We then determine how each patient can benefit from low vision care. Customized low vision aids or other low vision devices may be prescribed to improve sight when conventional glasses no longer help. Different visual aids may be required for different tasks.

Education is an important part of a patient’s experience at the Lions/LSU Regional Low Vision Center. Each patient is given individualized training by an Occupational Therapist in the use of low vision aids and in ways to maximize their remaining vision.
